I'm the person behind SweetAsSIM, a New Zealand travel eSIM business. I've spent over 15 years working in the telco industry, and along the way I've travelled a fair bit of the world, for work and for fun. Some things about travel have changed a lot in that time. Two of them haven't changed at all.

Roaming fees were always a pain

Data roaming adds up quickly, particularly on longer trips. Daily roaming passes can now cost as much as $10 a day, and that's before you've done much more than check Google Maps and message home.

On a long weekend away, using just 1GB of data would cost me more than the Uber to the airport.

That's a lot to pay for staying connected. Most people only find out what roaming cost them when the bill turns up weeks later, after the trip is over and nothing can be done about it.

Buying a SIM on arrival was never fun either

After a long flight, all I wanted was to get to the hotel, drop my bags and go exploring. I didn't want to queue at an airport kiosk, hunt around for a local shop that was still open, or work out a foreign mobile network in a language I didn't speak. I just wanted something simple that worked straight out of the box, so that I could land, open my phone and be online.

I'd also had enough of the confusion over what "Unlimited" really means. In my experience it almost never is. There's usually a fair-use limit buried in the terms, and once you pass it your speeds drop off a cliff. Even after 15 years in telco, I'd read a plan's fine print and still feel unsure what I was buying. If it takes that much effort for me, it's too much for someone who just wants to enjoy their holiday.

Why I built SweetAsSIM

I wanted to solve one common problem with a well-priced solution. Travellers shouldn't have to pay roaming fees, wait in line for a SIM, or decode confusing plans. A travel eSIM should be straightforward: pick a plan, pay one clear price in NZD, and get the full data you paid for at full speed.

SweetAsSIM covers 202 countries, so whether you're heading off on your OE, a work trip or a family holiday, there's a plan that suits. I'm not a mobile network myself. I partner with an established eSIM infrastructure provider, and I look after the plans, pricing and support from right here in New Zealand. If something isn't working, you'll be talking to me, not a call centre on the other side of the world.

There are no speed restrictions, and the plans are easy to understand. The GB number on your plan is what you get, at full speed, the whole time. If you need more data or a longer stay, you can top up using the simple link, so there's no new SIM and no starting again.
